Shallipopi Accuses Dapper Music of Financial Exploitation After Label Exit

Popular Nigerian musician Shallipopi has publicly accused his former record label, Dapper Music, of financial exploitation and breach of trust. The revelation comes weeks after the artist officially announced his departure from the label in November 2024.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Wednesday, Shallipopi detailed the reasons behind his decision to part ways with Dapper Music and its affiliate, Dvpper Digital. He alleged mishandling of his finances, disregard for his rights as an artist, and actions that jeopardized his career for the label's profit.

Shallipopi wrote:

“I am officially ending my agreement with Dapper Music and Dvpper Digital. This was not a choice I made lightly, but a step I had to take after my trust was broken, my finances mishandled, and my rights were disregarded as an artist.

This is bigger than just me. It is about every artiste and creator who pours their soul into their work, but only to face betrayal and exploitation from people that should be looking out for them. It is about standing up for fairness, integrity, and respect that we all deserve.

Instead of prioritizing my growth, they prioritised their own profits, putting my career and dreams at risk.”

A Pattern in the Industry?

Shallipopi’s statement has sparked discussions about the often fraught relationships between artists and record labels in the Nigerian music industry. His claims echo sentiments shared by other artists who have spoken out against exploitative practices, including lack of transparency in financial dealings and inadequate support for their creative growth.

The Industry's Double-Edged Sword

Record labels play a pivotal role in launching and sustaining artists’ careers, often providing resources, platforms, and connections. However, as Shallipopi’s experience suggests, the same entities can sometimes exploit their position of power. The musician’s bold move to exit his agreement highlights the growing awareness among artists about their rights and the importance of fair contracts.

Opinion: A Wake-Up Call for the Music Industry

Shallipopi’s allegations are a wake-up call for both emerging and established artists to prioritize understanding the terms of their contracts and to advocate for fairness. Labels, on the other hand, must address systemic issues and foster relationships built on trust and mutual respect.

For Shallipopi, this marks the beginning of a new chapter. While the separation from Dapper Music might pose challenges, it could also serve as an opportunity for him to chart a path aligned with his creative vision. His decision to speak out not only sheds light on his struggles but also paves the way for healthier dynamics in the music industry.

As the story unfolds, fans and industry stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how Shallipopi navigates his newfound independence—and how the industry responds to his powerful message.
