Tragedy in Bauchi: Traditional Singer John Zuya Dies After Alleged Food Poisoning

The entertainment scene in Bauchi State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of popular traditional singer, John Zuya, also known as John Mai Molo, who reportedly died after consuming suspected poisoned food.

The incident occurred in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area just days after Zuya returned from a performance in Lagos on October 16.

According to reports, Zuya began to show signs of distress shortly after eating, before collapsing. Despite being rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), doctors confirmed him dead on Saturday morning, October 18, 2025.

His colleague, Emma Wakili, confirmed the news on Facebook, writing:

“It is confirmed that John Zuya passed on this morning at 7:00 a.m. His body has been placed in the mortuary as we move forward with the investigation.”

Authorities have reportedly ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, while the police continue investigations into the suspected poisoning.

Meanwhile, tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues, and cultural enthusiasts who described Zuya as a gifted artist who used music to promote northern culture and community unity.

Opinion: A Tragic Loss That Raises Tough Questions About Envy, Trust, and the Safety of Artists

The death of John Zuya feels like more than just another tragic headline — it’s a painful reminder of how jealousy and betrayal can lurk closest to those who shine the brightest.

Zuya was a cultural icon — a man whose voice celebrated tradition and togetherness. For someone so full of life to be silenced by suspected poisoning is both heartbreaking and alarming. Sadly, his story echoes that of many rising stars in Nigeria whose success has drawn the wrong kind of attention.

It’s time society starts protecting its talents, especially those who bring value through art and culture. Artists like Zuya deserve more than applause when they perform — they deserve safety, respect, and genuine love when they return home.

The authorities must dig deep into this case. Justice, not just sympathy, should be the song we all sing in John Zuya’s memory.

🎵 May his melody never fade, and may his death spark a louder call for truth and safety in the entertainment world.
