Rivaldo Questions Xabi Alonso’s Treatment of Vinicius Jr — A Power Move or Misunderstanding at Real Madrid?

Rivaldo Questions Xabi Alonso’s Treatment of Vinicius Jr — A Power Move or Misunderstanding at Real Madrid?

Former Brazilian football legend Rivaldo has weighed in on the growing tension between Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso and star winger Vinicius Jr, suggesting that the Spanish coach might be targeting the Brazilian to assert authority and gain respect within the squad.

The controversy began after Alonso substituted Vinicius Jr in the 72nd minute of Real Madrid’s 2–1 win over Barcelona, replacing him with Rodrygo.

Vinicius’s reaction was impossible to miss — visibly frustrated, he made gestures toward the camera and appeared to mutter words translated to, “I should leave the club.” The Brazilian then stormed straight into the dressing room while the match was still in progress, sparking widespread speculation about a rift with his manager.

Reacting to the incident, Rivaldo, speaking via Madrid Xtra as quoted by Sportskeeda, said:

“I don’t know if there’s something personal between Vinicius and Alonso, but sometimes it happens that a coach chooses the most prominent player to gain the group’s respect.

Vini, being the best player in the world last year, might become a target for this.

If I can do this with Vini, I can do it with any other player.”

💭 Opinion: When Greatness Meets Authority — The Vinicius-Alonso Dilemma

What’s happening at Real Madrid right now feels less like a tactical disagreement and more like a power test between two strong personalities — a young superstar who thrives on expression and a new manager who demands control.

Rivaldo’s point hits home. Football history is full of examples where new coaches assert dominance by challenging the biggest name in the dressing room — from Guardiola and Ronaldinho, to Mourinho and Casillas, and even Ferguson and Beckham. Sometimes, it’s about setting a tone.

But there’s a fine line between leadership and alienation. Vinicius Jr isn’t just another player — he’s arguably the emotional heartbeat of Real Madrid’s attack, the spark that ignites the Bernabéu. If Alonso’s move was purely to “gain respect,” it could backfire unless managed with care.

Still, perhaps this friction is what champions need — pressure that forges chemistry and clarity. Alonso’s Madrid is young, disciplined, and ambitious; Vinicius’s fire and flair are equally essential.

If both men can find balance — authority meeting artistry — Real Madrid might not just stay dominant; they’ll redefine what modern football power looks like. ⚪🔥

Because when passion and discipline finally align, greatness isn’t just achieved — it’s inevitable.
