Yvonne Jegede Calls Marriage “Overrated,” Open to Remarriage but Not Actively Seeking It
Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede has shared her candid views on marriage, describing it as “overrated” while revealing that she is open to remarriage, though she is not actively pursuing it. The 42-year-old made the remarks in a recent interview with Naija FM Lagos.
“I am open to remarriage if it comes, but I am not looking for it. I have learnt not to say ‘never,’” Jegede said. She elaborated on her perspective, noting, “A lot of people who dated for 10 to 15 years, got married and they broke up within 2 to 3 years. Sometimes, you wonder why such couples didn’t just remain unmarried. Because when they add the marriage tag, a lot of intolerance gets in the way.”
Jegede also suggested that couples may benefit more from simply cohabiting with their partners rather than rushing into marriage.
Her remarks come years after her own marriage to fellow actor Olakunle Abounce Fawole ended in 2019, less than a year after they tied the knot. She previously cited financial imbalance and her ex-husband’s inability to handle or respect her as contributing factors, revealing that she had been the primary provider and regretted prioritizing love over financial stability.
Opinion: Rethinking Marriage in Modern Times
Jegede’s reflections highlight a growing trend among modern professionals and celebrities: the reevaluation of traditional marital norms. Her stance resonates with many who feel that societal pressure often overshadows personal compatibility and emotional stability. By openly discussing her experience, Jegede not only challenges the conventional glorification of marriage but also encourages conversations about healthy, realistic partnerships.
While marriage remains a cherished institution for some, Jegede’s honesty serves as a reminder that fulfillment in relationships can take many forms—and that choosing personal growth and stability sometimes outweighs societal expectations.
