AFCON 2025: Remo Stars’ Serge Obassa Makes Benin Republic’s 30-Man Provisional Squad

AFCON 2025: Remo Stars’ Serge Obassa Makes Benin Republic’s 30-Man Provisional Squad

Remo Stars goalkeeper Serge Obassa has earned a spot in Benin Republic’s 30-man preliminary squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, continuing his impressive rise since joining the Nigerian club at the start of the 2024/25 season.

Obassa, who has grown into a dependable figure for the Cheetahs, will compete for the final squad position alongside Saturnin Allagbe and Dandjinou Marcel, the two other goalkeepers named by head coach Gernot Rohr.

The squad also features several familiar names, including captain Steve Mounié, Mohamed Tijani, Verdon Oliver, Djodel Dosou, Junior Olaitan, and Tosin Aiyegun, highlighting Rohr’s commitment to retaining a strong and experienced core.

Rohr is expected to reduce the squad from 30 to 25 players next week as the team intensifies preparations for the continental showpiece. The Cheetahs will begin their AFCON training camp in Ben Slimane, Morocco, on Wednesday, December 10, as they gear up for a challenging campaign.

Benin Republic has been drawn into Group D, where they will face two-time champions Senegal, the always unpredictable Democratic Republic of Congo, and a rapidly improving Botswana side.

Opinion: A Well-Deserved Spotlight for Obassa — and a Big Opportunity

Serge Obassa’s inclusion is not just a routine call-up; it is a clear recognition of his growth and reliability. Since joining Remo Stars, he has shown composure, sharp reflexes, and leadership — qualities that have made him one of the standout goalkeepers in the NPFL this season.

For Benin Republic, this is a smart move by Gernot Rohr. AFCON is a tournament where solid goalkeeping often defines a team’s journey. Obassa brings youthful energy mixed with confidence, and he could become an important asset, especially in a tough group where every mistake will be costly.

From another angle, this call-up continues to spotlight the growing influence of NPFL players on the continental stage. It shows that performances in local leagues are being watched, valued, and rewarded.

Group D may look intimidating, but Benin has shown in recent years that they can upset bigger teams. With a blend of seasoned players and rising talents like Obassa, the Cheetahs might surprise many.

For now, all eyes will be on the final 25-man list — and whether Obassa’s name remains on it. If he makes the cut, AFCON 2025 could be his breakout moment.
