DJ Cuppy Fires Back at Age-Shamers: ‘What Are People in Their 40s, Fossils?’
Popular Nigerian disc jockey and billionaire’s daughter, Florence Otedola, widely known as DJ Cuppy, has clapped back at critics constantly pressuring her to get married due to her age.
The music star took to her X handle on Tuesday to question why she’s being labeled as “old” at just 32, humorously wondering what people in their 40s would be called if her age is already considered ancient.
“I am 32 years old, and some of you people are calling me old. If that is the case, what are we calling people in their 40s? Prehistoric? Fossilized? Museum exhibits? Nawa.” — DJ Cuppy
For many netizens and fans, DJ Cuppy’s relationship status has become a hot topic, with some questioning her marital status at every given opportunity. This social pressure isn’t unfamiliar to many celebrities, especially women, who constantly have to battle unrealistic societal expectations.
The 32-year-old previously shared that she desires to settle down with a 6-footer and a banker, which gives fans a glimpse of her relationship preferences. Interestingly, she even prophesied that the 2025 Valentine’s Day would be the last she celebrates unmarried.
Her last publicized relationship was her engagement to British boxer Ryan Taylor. Unfortunately, the duo parted ways in July 2023, just seven months after their surprise engagement in November 2022.
Opinion: Societal Pressure and Celebrity Relationships
DJ Cuppy’s frustration is valid and highlights a growing issue in society—the unnecessary pressure placed on women to settle down by a certain age. Age-shaming is not only unfair but also disrespectful to personal journeys and choices.
Ironically, many fans admire DJ Cuppy’s success and independence but still criticize her for not conforming to societal timelines. It’s about time we let people live life at their own pace, especially in a world where success and happiness are defined differently by everyone.
DJ Cuppy’s witty comeback serves as a reminder that being single at 32 is not a crime, and it certainly doesn’t make anyone old.
What do you think about DJ Cuppy’s response? Is society being too hard on her, or is it all part of the price of fame?
