Rwanda’s FERWAFA Media Officer, Maurice, Declares: “Stopping Osimhen Is Crucial”
As the countdown continues to the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matchday five encounter between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Rwanda’s Amavubi, the hosts have made their intentions clear. The media officer of the Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA), Oliver Maurice, has emphasized the importance of keeping Victor Osimhen under control if they are to secure a favorable result.
The 26-year-old Galatasaray striker has been in lethal form this season, recording 26 goals and five assists in 30 matches across all competitions for the Turkish Süper Lig champions. His prowess in front of goal is well-known, and Maurice understands the threat he poses.
“Osimhen is on fire, and we will try to stop him in this match,” Maurice stated confidently during an interview with SCORENigeria. “Nigeria has top-quality players, but we’re not afraid; we only respect them.”
Rwanda, buoyed by the fact that Nigeria has never won on their home soil, is determined to make a statement in front of their fans. Maurice added, “We’re all excited ahead of this match, and our fans will troop out in numbers to support the team.”
Opinion: Can Rwanda Handle the Osimhen Threat?
Maurice’s confidence is admirable, but his emphasis on stopping Osimhen underscores the enormous challenge ahead. The Super Eagles’ talisman has proven to be a nightmare for defenders with his blistering pace, technical skill, and finishing ability.
However, Rwanda’s pride in having never lost to Nigeria on home soil could serve as a psychological advantage. Playing before a passionate crowd at the Amahoro Stadium may boost their morale and determination to prove that record is no fluke.
Nevertheless, solely focusing on stopping Osimhen might be risky. The Super Eagles have a wealth of talent beyond Osimhen, including creative midfielders and dangerous wingers who can turn the game around at any moment.
It’s a clash of mental toughness, tactical discipline, and precision. Will Rwanda’s defensive strategy succeed, or will Victor Osimhen and his teammates shatter their unbeaten record at home?
