“Cinderella or Clergy?” — Desmond Elliot’s AMVCA Outfit Sparks Online Drama
Nollywood actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot might have intended to make a fashion statement at the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), but social media had other plans.
Appearing in a flowing, ball-like black gown, Elliot’s bold choice of attire instantly set tongues wagging online — with reactions ranging from hilarious to harsh.
While some compared him to Cinderella looking for his lost slipper, others were more blunt, asking if he had switched roles from lawmaker to “Madam Elliott.”
“This one nah low budget Cinderella! He need to lost him shoe for the party,” a user joked.
“Are you an Israelite sir? Which one wey you dey wear skirt?” another quipped.
💭 Opinion: Style or Stunt? Desmond’s Fashion Sparks Needed Conversation
Desmond Elliot is no stranger to controversy, especially on social media. But this time, it’s not his political decisions under scrutiny — it’s his fashion identity.
While we must celebrate individuality and the growing fusion between politics and pop culture, there’s a fine line between creativity and caricature. It begs the question: Was this a genuine artistic expression, or a desperate attempt to stay relevant in an industry that’s forgotten his star power?
Fashion is freedom, yes — but public figures must recognize that freedom attracts feedback. Sometimes applause, other times memes. In this case, it’s clear Nigerians aren’t buying what Elliot was selling — literally or metaphorically.
What do you think — trailblazer or attention-seeker?
