“No Special Treatment”: Alexi Lalas Slams Messi’s Heated Referee Confrontation After Inter Miami Draw

“No Special Treatment”: Alexi Lalas Slams Messi’s Heated Referee Confrontation After Inter Miami Draw

Tensions flared at the PayPal Stadium as Lionel Messi found himself at the center of controversy following Inter Miami’s dramatic 3-3 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Argentine icon, known for his calm demeanor, lost his cool after referee Tim Ford denied him a late free-kick — and now, he’s facing criticism from former USA international Alexi Lalas.

The Flashpoint

In the 93rd minute, Messi went on a dazzling solo run, only to be brought down just outside the box by Daniel Munie. Expecting a free kick — and possibly a game-winning opportunity — Messi was visibly frustrated when the referee waved play on.

After the final whistle, Messi confronted referee Tim Ford, leading to a heated exchange that required San Jose manager Bruce Arena to step in and restrain the Inter Miami captain. Ford reportedly even threatened to send Messi off — an extremely rare scene in Messi’s illustrious career.

Lalas’ Critique: “It Was a Bad Look”

Speaking on his State of the Union podcast, Alexi Lalas didn’t hold back:

“I thought it was a bad look for Messi, to be quite honest with you,” Lalas said.
“And I loved the way that game was refereed. At times the referee was saying, ‘No, you get up. I don’t care that you are Messi.’”

Lalas went on to praise referee Tim Ford for standing firm and not giving in to what some might consider the “Messi effect.”

🗣️ Opinion: Icons Must Lead by Example

Let’s be honest — Messi is human, and emotions run high in tight games. But when you're Lionel Messi, the world is watching, and every action carries weight.

Fans admire him not just for his footwork, but also for his humility. That’s why this fiery outburst feels out of character — and also why it raised eyebrows globally. Lalas may sound harsh, but he makes a valid point: no player should be above the game or its rules, not even an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Messi's reaction may have stemmed from frustration, passion, or sheer competitive spirit — but there’s a thin line between passion and petulance. Referees must be respected if the integrity of the game is to stand.

⚽ What’s Next?

Inter Miami will now shift focus to their next MLS fixture, but all eyes will be on Messi — not just for goals, but for grace under pressure. If anything, this incident is a reminder: even legends must sometimes be reminded that respect is as vital as talent.
