“United Let Them Go Too Soon” — Rio Ferdinand Names 4 Players Man Utd Should Have Never Sold

“United Let Them Go Too Soon” — Rio Ferdinand Names 4 Players Man Utd Should Have Never Sold

Former Manchester United stalwart Rio Ferdinand has pointed fingers at the club’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, claiming that the Red Devils wrongfully offloaded players who could have offered long-term value.

In a recent episode on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand stated that the club should never have sold:

  • Rafael da Silva

  • Fabio da Silva

  • Danny Welbeck

  • Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez

The ex-defender questioned the club's recruitment decisions over the years, asking fans and pundits alike to consider whether United truly improved those positions after selling the quartet.

“There are no full-backs who’ve come in and done much better than Rafael or Fabio,” Ferdinand said. “Welbeck and Chicharito were in their prime. I was surprised we let them go.”

💭 OPINION: Did United Lose Their Soul After Ferguson?

Ferdinand’s comments hit a nerve that many fans still feel — the loss of identity and loyalty that once defined Manchester United. Players like Welbeck and Chicharito embodied homegrown grit and impact. The Da Silva twins may not have been world-class stars, but they gave the club balance and depth, especially in big matches.

Since their departure, United have poured hundreds of millions into replacements, yet arguably haven’t achieved better results or cohesion on the pitch.

It’s not just about talent. As Ferdinand implies, it’s about the heart, work ethic, and cultural fit — elements United seem to have lost in the fog of big-money signings and constant rebuilds.

With new manager Erik ten Hag still trying to shape the club’s direction, Ferdinand’s words are a timely reminder that sometimes, the right player isn't the flashiest — but the one who bleeds for the badge.

📌 Could a different decision in the past have changed United’s present? We’ll never know. But fans will agree: too many good ones were let go too soon.
