Phil Jones Backs Manchester United to Sign Emi Martinez for Ruben Amorim's Era

Phil Jones Backs Manchester United to Sign Emi Martinez for Ruben Amorim's Era

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has urged the Red Devils to consider signing Aston Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, as the club looks to reinforce its squad under the expected managerial reign of Ruben Amorim.

Speaking with OLBG (via Metro), Jones praised the Argentine shot-stopper for his experience and reliability, saying:

“I like him. I think he is a very good goalkeeper. I look at David De Gea, who Manchester United let go—he won us so many games. I think Emi Martinez, if he came in, would be a top signing. No getting away from that.”

While current No. 1 Andre Onana has shown flashes of brilliance since joining the club, his inconsistencies and high-risk style of play have left many questioning whether United need more stability between the posts. Jones believes Martinez, 32, offers exactly that — world-class reflexes, leadership, and the experience of winning the World Cup.

🗣️ Opinion: Is Emi Martinez the Missing Piece in United’s Puzzle?

Let’s be honest — Manchester United’s defensive woes haven’t been helped by indecision and errors from the back. If United are serious about competing for titles again under a new era with Amorim (if confirmed), they need a reliable last line of defense.

Martinez isn’t just solid — he’s commanding, confident under pressure, and psychologically sharp. His presence alone could elevate the backline’s composure, something that’s sorely lacking at Old Trafford.

Of course, it depends on whether the club sticks with Onana or decides to rotate or even sell. But if they’re gunning for trophies, a World Cup winner with Premier League experience is not a bad place to start.

⚽ Martinez on the Move?

Martinez has already drawn interest from top European clubs and the Saudi Pro League. With Aston Villa preparing for a European campaign, they might be reluctant to let him go — unless the price is right.

Manchester United, however, could be the perfect next step for a keeper who thrives on big stages and high expectations.

📣 Do you think Martinez would be an upgrade over Onana? Would he fit in Amorim’s system at United? Let’s hear your thoughts!
