Man United Lose Europa League Final Edge as Spurs’ Fixture Gets Rescheduled
Manchester United’s subtle edge in preparation time ahead of a potential Europa League final clash against Tottenham Hotspur has now vanished.
The final, set for May 21, seemed to be tilting slightly in United’s favour after they crushed Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final, and Spurs edged Bodo/Glimt 3-1. With both sides poised to meet in the final, the scheduling of their Premier League games was expected to play a role in fitness and readiness.
Originally, United were set to face Chelsea on Friday, May 16, while Tottenham’s clash with Aston Villa was booked for Sunday, May 18—giving United nearly two extra days of rest.
But in a strategic and understandable move, Spurs successfully petitioned for their game to be brought forward. It will now kick off on the same Friday, albeit 45 minutes earlier at 7:30 pm UK time.
⚽ Opinion: A Level Playing Field Now Sets Up a True Final Test
This change eliminates any recovery advantage United may have enjoyed, and it’s a fair decision from the Premier League. At this stage of the season, especially with silverware and pride on the line, no team should enter the final handicapped by fixture congestion.
This also underlines Tottenham’s renewed focus and seriousness under Ange Postecoglou, who seems intent on ending Spurs’ long wait for a major European trophy.
United fans may be disappointed to lose that subtle scheduling edge, but if Erik ten Hag’s side wants to lift the trophy, they’ll have to earn it the hard way—on equal terms.
