May 9 U-20 AFCON: Eric Chelle Applauds Flying Eagles' Grit, Urges Focus Ahead of Senegal Clash

Nigeria’s U-20 head coach Eric Chelle has shared his thoughts on the Flying Eagles’ progress at the ongoing 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, offering a mix of encouragement and realism following their hard-fought draw against Kenya.

Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, Aliyu Zubairu’s side has yet to fully convince, finishing second in Group B with five points from three matches. The 2-2 draw against Kenya on Wednesday exposed cracks in the team’s consistency, but Chelle chose to focus on the positives.

“I’m very happy with our U20 team’s qualification. It wasn’t an easy match, because we were up against a very good team (Kenya). We reacted in this match. Every time we conceded a goal, the team responded well,” Chelle told CAFonline.

Chelle, who watched from the stands, praised the team's resilience and spirit, noting that their ability to respond to setbacks shows promise ahead of their quarter-final showdown with defending champions Senegal at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia next Monday.
