Eric Chelle Breaks Silence on Osimhen’s Absence: “He Needs Time to Sort His Future”

Eric Chelle Breaks Silence on Osimhen’s Absence: “He Needs Time to Sort His Future”

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has finally addressed the speculation surrounding the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen from Nigeria’s squad for the Unity Cup and the upcoming international friendly against Russia.

Osimhen, who remains the Super Eagles’ talisman with 26 goals in 41 appearances, was a noticeable absentee in the recent squad lists — and fans weren’t quiet about it.

⚽ “He’s the Best Striker in the World…” — Chelle

Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Chelle praised Osimhen’s quality but revealed that the decision to leave him out was strategic and necessary.

“Victor (Osimhen) is, for me, the best striker in the world,” Chelle stated confidently.
“But it is difficult for him to come for this game because he played a season with a lot of pressure.”

Chelle went further, hinting at the delicate nature of Osimhen’s transfer window, suggesting that the striker’s focus is currently divided.

“The reality is, there is a transfer window. During this time, a player like him is not focused at 100%.”

🔄 Transfer Drama vs National Duty

Osimhen’s ongoing transfer speculations, reportedly involving Premier League giants, have clearly taken center stage. While some fans expected him to suit up against Russia on June 6, others now see Chelle’s reasoning as both realistic and player-sensitive.

There’s no denying Osimhen has had a gruelling season filled with club pressure, injury setbacks, and speculation surrounding a high-profile move — with Galatasaray, Chelsea, PSG, and Arsenal all reportedly circling.

💬 OPINION: Right Call or Missed Opportunity?

While fans naturally want their best legs on the pitch, Chelle’s decision to give Osimhen space could actually show a coach who understands the mental toll of elite football. Nigeria has already qualified for the AFCON and needs its star striker fresh — mentally and physically.

Yes, it’s disappointing not to see Osimhen dazzle against Russia, but risking burnout or distraction may cost more in the long run.

One thing’s certain: when Victor Osimhen returns, fans will expect fireworks.

🗣️ What do you think?

Was Chelle right to rest Osimhen for the Unity Cup and friendly, or should the striker have answered the national call?
