OFFICIAL: Arsenal Reach Agreement with Sporting CP for Viktor Gyökeres
After weeks of intense negotiations and speculation, Arsenal have finally sealed a deal with Sporting CP for the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres.
According to The Athletic, the two clubs agreed to a £64 million package, which includes:
£54.8 million initial fee
£8.6 million in add-ons
Although an agreement had been in place in principle, the deal almost collapsed over disagreements regarding contingency bonuses.
🧨 Player Power & Pressure
The transfer saga took a dramatic turn when Gyökeres refused to join Sporting's pre-season, allegedly threatening to go on strike. Club president Frederico Varandas reportedly warned the 27-year-old of potential sanctions if he continued to disrupt internal operations.
That pressure seemingly worked — and Arsenal now have their man.
🧠 Arteta’s Vision Comes Alive
Manager Mikel Arteta had prioritized signing a new striker this summer. After missing out on targets like Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko, Gyökeres emerged as the top choice due to his strength, pace, and elite finishing ability.
He’s expected to slot in as the Gunners’ new No. 9, giving Arsenal a fresh attacking focal point alongside Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
✍️ Opinion: A Power Move or a Panic Buy?
Gyökeres is coming off a sensational season at Sporting, with over 40 goal contributions. But the Premier League is a different beast. While some fans are thrilled, others question if Arsenal are overpaying for a player with limited top-5 league experience.
🔍 Will he handle the pressure of leading Arsenal’s title charge?
🔍 Is this the striker that takes them past Man City?
🗣️ What Fans Are Saying

“£64m feels steep. He better bang in 20+ goals.”
