WAFCON Final: Super Falcons Coach Condemns Use of Laser Pointers by Moroccan Fans

WAFCON Final: Super Falcons Coach Condemns Use of Laser Pointers by Moroccan Fans

Nigeria’s Super Falcons may have lifted the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy in a thrilling 3-2 victory over host nation Morocco, but the final wasn’t without controversy.

Head coach Justin Madugu has expressed disappointment over the repeated use of laser pointers by Moroccan fans during the heated encounter, describing it as unsportsmanlike and potentially dangerous behavior.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Madugu disclosed that even he was personally targeted:

“In fact, the lasers were not applied on the players alone — even myself. They kept pointing those lasers at me.”

Despite the disruptions, the coach praised his team for their focus and resilience under pressure, saying:

“It did not have any effect on them. You could see even when the lasers were coming, nobody bothered about it. We kept going and remained focused on the game.”

However, he questioned the legitimacy of such actions being allowed in a high-profile tournament:

“I don’t know if it is proper that this type of situation should continue. I don’t think it is proper.”

💬 Opinion: A Historic Win Tainted by Poor Sportsmanship?

While Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON title is cause for national celebration, the incident once again raises the alarm about fan behavior and stadium security in African football tournaments.

Laser pointers — often used to distract goalkeepers or players during set-pieces — have long been criticized in international football and are banned in many leagues due to the potential harm they cause, both physically and mentally.

That a CAF-sanctioned final allowed such disruptions to persist is worrying. If we are to elevate the standard of African women’s football, then respect for the game, the players, and fair play must be non-negotiable.

🇳🇬 Nigeria: Champions With Character

While the lasers may have aimed to blind them, the Super Falcons responded with vision, skill, and grace — a testament to their maturity and championship mentality. Instead of folding under pressure, they delivered one of the most memorable finals in WAFCON history.

📢 Final Word

CAF and local organizing committees must act decisively to stamp out such behavior in future tournaments. Passionate support should never cross into aggression or sabotage. For now, Nigeria celebrates — but with a stern reminder of what must change to protect the integrity of African football.
