NPFL Lifts Suspension on Goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka Amid Betting Allegations

NPFL Lifts Suspension on Goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka Amid Betting Allegations

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has lifted the suspension placed on goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka over an alleged betting offence.

In a statement signed by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, and addressed to the shot-stopper on Tuesday, the NPFL confirmed that Adeyinka is now free to register with any club of his choice for the ongoing season.

The league body explained that the decision was influenced by Adeyinka’s full cooperation during the investigation into the allegations. However, they maintained that further inquiries into the case are still ongoing.

TalkTalk Nigeria recalls that Adeyinka was suspended earlier this season following accusations of betting on NPFL games during the 2024/25 campaign.

Opinion: A Second Chance for Adeyinka—But the NPFL Must Stand Firm

This development is a relief for Adewale Adeyinka, whose career had been clouded by the suspension. Allowing him to play again restores his livelihood and gives him the chance to prove his commitment on the pitch rather than being judged solely by allegations.

However, the NPFL must ensure this decision does not set a dangerous precedent. Betting scandals have the potential to damage the credibility of the league and erode fan trust in Nigerian football. By keeping the investigation open, the NPFL has shown it is treading cautiously—a wise move.

For Adeyinka, this is more than just a reinstatement; it is a second chance to rebuild trust with fans, teammates, and the league itself. If he truly has nothing to hide, the best way forward is through consistent, disciplined performances that remind everyone why he became a top goalkeeper in the first place.
