Mourinho Declares: “I Am Not a Blue Anymore” Ahead of Chelsea Return

Benfica manager José Mourinho has insisted he is “not a Blue” anymore as he prepares for another emotional return to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, when his side face Chelsea in their second Champions League group-stage fixture of the season.

The Portuguese tactician, who won three Premier League titles across two stints with the London club, acknowledged the deep history he shares with Chelsea but made it clear his loyalties are now fully with Benfica.

“Of course, I am part of their history and they are part of my history,” Mourinho told reporters on Monday. “When I say I am not a Blue, it is about the job I do tomorrow. I don’t think Chelsea fans will boo me. At least when I am on the street they ask me for selfies and pictures.”

Mourinho’s words highlight the tricky balance he must maintain — honouring a club where he is revered as a legend, while also showing total commitment to the job at hand.

Opinion: A Battle Between Legacy and Loyalty

Mourinho’s statement may sting for some Chelsea fans, but it’s a necessary reminder that football is a profession, not just a romance. For years, Stamford Bridge was his empire, where he built a reputation as “The Special One.” Yet, sentimentality cannot guide him when he steps into the dugout with Benfica.

Still, Mourinho’s honesty is refreshing. Rather than hiding behind clichés, he admits his past and embraces his present. Chelsea fans may sing his name, but they should not expect favours. The Champions League is unforgiving, and Mourinho, ever the competitor, will come with only one mission: victory.

In truth, Stamford Bridge under the lights has always been a stage for Mourinho’s drama — whether as the conquering hero or the wily antagonist. Tuesday promises to be another chapter in a story where legacy meets loyalty, and perhaps, where Chelsea fans will be reminded that love in football is rarely exclusive.
