Chelle: Super Eagles Still Motivated Despite Slim World Cup Chances

Chelle: Super Eagles Still Motivated Despite Slim World Cup Chances

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has assured fans that his players will remain motivated in their pursuit of a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with South Africa denting their qualification hopes.

Nigeria fell behind in Bloemfontein after captain William Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net, but defender Calvin Bassey equalised with a towering header before halftime. The Eagles pushed for a winner but failed to break down a resilient Bafana Bafana side.

The result leaves Nigeria six points behind the group leaders with just two fixtures remaining. To stand any chance of sneaking into the tournament, Chelle’s men must beat both Lesotho and Benin Republic in October and hope results elsewhere go their way.

“My players are professionals and I know they will still want to win the remaining two games,” Chelle told reporters after the match. “A lot can happen over the next one month. But before that, we will have to analyse our performance tonight, which will not be easy.”

Opinion: Hope Fades, But Pride Must Remain

Chelle’s words reflect a hard truth: Nigeria’s fate is no longer entirely in their own hands. The Super Eagles have stumbled too often in this qualifying campaign, leaving fans frustrated and anxious about missing another World Cup.

Yet, there is still something to play for — pride, professionalism, and the possibility (however slim) that football’s unpredictability may still swing in Nigeria’s favour. The matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic are no longer just about points; they are about restoring faith in a team that has left many disappointed.

For Chelle, the next month will be about more than tactics. It will be about reviving belief, both in the dressing room and among millions of Nigerians who still cling to hope. If the Super Eagles can close out strongly, even if qualification proves out of reach, it could lay the groundwork for rebuilding a team worthy of Africa’s “giant” reputation.
