President Tinubu Hails Super Eagles for AFCON Bronze Medal Triumph
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for clinching the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, praising their resilience and determination following the semi-final disappointment against host nation Morocco.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president highlighted the team’s “determination, persistence, and can-do spirit” that reflect the best of Nigerian character. Tinubu noted that despite the heartbreak of losing to Morocco on penalties last Wednesday, the Super Eagles bounced back to overpower Egypt in the third-place playoff, winning via a tense penalty shootout after dominating regular time.
“Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed. However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off,” the president said.
Opinion: A Bronze Medal That Feels Like Gold
While Nigeria fell short of the AFCON final, the Super Eagles’ performance in Rabat deserves celebration. Recovering from the disappointment of the semi-final and holding their nerve against a seven-time champion like Egypt shows immense character.
This bronze medal is more than just a consolation; it is a symbol of Nigeria’s resilience on the continental stage. Young players like Stanley Nwabali and Alex Iwobi, alongside seasoned campaigners, demonstrated that even in setbacks, the Super Eagles can rise to the occasion. For a nation hungry for football glory, this victory, while not gold, carries the pride and hope of a team building towards future triumphs.
