Guardiola Plays Down Maresca-to-Man City Speculation

Guardiola Plays Down Maresca-to-Man City Speculation

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has dismissed rumours linking former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca with a future move to the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking to reporters ahead of City’s Premier League clash with Chelsea on Saturday, the Spanish tactician insisted he was unaware of any talks between Maresca and Manchester City’s hierarchy.

Reports had suggested that before his dismissal at Chelsea, Maresca held preliminary discussions with several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, as a possible successor when Guardiola’s contract expires. Guardiola currently has one year left on his deal, fueling speculation about his long-term future at the club.

However, Guardiola was quick to shut down the rumours, insisting he had no information beyond what had been reported in the media.

“No idea. You have, I’m pretty sure, more info than me,” he said when asked about Maresca’s alleged talks with City officials.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss also declined to be drawn into discussions about his own future at the Etihad, responding with a mix of humour and firmness.

“You want to fire me?! No, good. My salary is so high. So I have one more year on my contract,” Guardiola added, before stressing that he would not comment on rumours he knew nothing about.

Opinion: Guardiola’s response reflects his trademark calm and control amid speculation, while also highlighting how quickly narratives form in modern football. With his contract ticking down, any link to potential successors will inevitably attract attention. However, City’s stability under Guardiola suggests there is no immediate urgency for change. For Maresca, the rumours underline the respect he still commands despite his Chelsea exit, but until concrete decisions are made, speculation remains just that—noise surrounding one of football’s most secure managerial dynasties.
