CAF Sanctions Algeria Over AFCON Quarter-Final Fallout Against Nigeria

CAF Sanctions Algeria Over AFCON Quarter-Final Fallout Against Nigeria

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down strict disciplinary measures to Algeria following a series of incidents that marred their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

In a statement released after deliberations, CAF’s disciplinary board confirmed that the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has been hit with both sporting and financial sanctions after finding its players, officials and supporters guilty of misconduct during and after the heated encounter.

As part of the ruling, goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches, a ban he will serve during the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. Meanwhile, defender Rafik Belghali received a four-match suspension, with two matches suspended, meaning he will immediately miss two games unless further offences are committed.

CAF also imposed a $100,000 fine on the FAF, citing improper conduct by Algerian players, officials and fans as the basis for the heavy financial penalty.

Opinion: A Clear Message from CAF on Discipline

CAF’s decision sends a strong message that indiscipline will no longer be tolerated on Africa’s biggest football stage. The AFCON is meant to be a celebration of the continent’s talent and unity, and incidents that threaten its integrity must be addressed firmly.

While sanctions alone cannot erase the tension that followed that quarter-final encounter, they do set an important precedent. Holding federations accountable for the actions of their teams and supporters encourages better behaviour and protects the spirit of fair competition.

For Nigeria, the ruling may feel like delayed justice, but for African football as a whole, it represents progress. If CAF continues on this path of firm and consistent discipline, the quality, credibility and global respect of African football can only improve.
