Joke Silva Shares Insights on Marriage to Older Men: “They Let You Get Away with a Lot”
Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva has opened up about one of the perks of marrying older men, drawing from her own decades-long marriage to fellow actor Olu Jacob. Speaking on the TVC program Your View, the 64-year-old actress reflected on her love journey with Jacob, who is 20 years her senior.
Silva, who tied the knot with Jacob in 1985, revealed that while it wasn’t love at first sight for her, the age difference offered certain advantages in their relationship. “For him, it was love at first sight but for me, it wasn’t,” she said. “This older men allows you to get away with a lot of things.”
Sharing memories of their early days together, Silva recounted meeting Jacob on stage and then on a movie set, where she was unaware of his age. “Everybody knew it was the great Olu Jacob who was coming, except me. When he came, we got on very well and it was after we started dating that I discovered his age because he looked so good,” she added.
The couple’s union, which began when Jacob was 44 and Silva was 24, has been blessed with two children and remains one of Nollywood’s most enduring partnerships.
Opinion: Age and Understanding in Marriage
Joke Silva’s reflections highlight an often-overlooked aspect of relationships with significant age gaps — the patience, experience, and perspective that older partners can bring. Marrying an older spouse doesn’t just come with challenges; it can foster a dynamic where life experience translates into understanding, forgiveness, and flexibility.
Silva’s candid observation that older men “allow you to get away with a lot of things” speaks less to indulgence and more to emotional maturity. Such relationships often thrive on patience, communication, and a sense of security that younger partners may sometimes seek elsewhere.
Her story also underscores the importance of mutual respect and shared growth. Despite starting their romance with different expectations and paces, Silva and Jacob have built a marriage that balances love, guidance, and partnership — offering a model for longevity in a world where celebrity unions often face intense scrutiny.
In the end, their marriage is a reminder that age differences can complement, rather than complicate, a relationship, when grounded in respect, shared values, and genuine affection.
