CAF Set to Decide Fate of WAFCON 2026 Amid Growing Uncertainty

CAF Set to Decide Fate of WAFCON 2026 Amid Growing Uncertainty

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to make a crucial announcement within the next 48 hours regarding the 2026 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, amid growing speculation that the tournament could be postponed.

Morocco is scheduled to host the competition later this month, with the tournament originally set to kick off on March 17 and run through April 3, 2026. However, uncertainty has emerged around the event, raising concerns among fans, teams, and stakeholders across the continent.

CAF’s Communications Director, Luxolo September, hinted at the seriousness of the situation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the continental football governing body is giving the WAFCON situation “urgent and high-level attention.”

The North African nation, Morocco, also hosted the delayed 2024 edition of the tournament, which further highlights the country’s growing reputation as a reliable host for major African football competitions.

The upcoming tournament carries even greater significance for participating teams, as the semifinalists will secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

A Critical Moment for Women’s Football in Africa

While CAF has yet to confirm any postponement, the speculation itself underscores a persistent challenge facing women’s football in Africa: consistency in planning and organization.

Over the past decade, women’s football on the continent has grown tremendously in talent, visibility, and fan support. National teams such as Super Falcons have helped raise the profile of the women’s game globally. Yet, administrative uncertainties like this threaten to slow that progress.

If the tournament is postponed, it could disrupt team preparations, affect qualification timelines for the global stage, and dampen the momentum that African women’s football has been building.

At a time when women’s football is gaining worldwide recognition, many believe CAF must ensure that decisions regarding WAFCON reflect the seriousness and respect the competition deserves.

For players who have worked tirelessly to reach this stage, clarity and stability are not just administrative necessities—they are essential for the continued growth of the women’s game in Africa.
