Peter Okoye Reveals He Nearly Chose Football Over Music, Says Destiny Led Him to the Mic

Peter Okoye Reveals He Nearly Chose Football Over Music, Says Destiny Led Him to the Mic

Nigerian music star Peter Okoye has revealed that he once came close to pursuing a professional football career before eventually finding global fame in the music industry.

The singer, who forms one half of the legendary duo P-Square, shared the revelation in a recent post on his Instagram page while reflecting on memories from his youth.

According to Okoye, he trained at the renowned Pepsi Football Academy in Jos, one of Nigeria’s most prominent grassroots football development centres. During his time at the academy, his football career was already gaining momentum.

He disclosed that he even received an opportunity to play professionally for Plateau United F.C. while still a player at the academy. At the time, he was balancing two passions—football and music.

Adding a nostalgic twist to the story, Okoye shared a throwback video featuring former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel, revealing that the two were once teammates during their junior football days.

Despite the chance to begin his professional career in the Nigerian league, Okoye explained that his ultimate dream back then was to play football in Europe. However, life eventually took him in another direction.

“Never give up! Yes, I used to play football and chase music at the same time. I was even offered the chance to play for Plateau United from Pepsi Academy back then in Jos. But my dream was always to play in Europe,” he wrote.

“Somehow, destiny chose the mic instead. Today, I’m an established and successful artiste/musician. That’s nothing but grace.”

Opinion: When Destiny Takes a Different Route

Peter Okoye’s story is a powerful reminder that success does not always follow the path we initially plan. Many young people grow up with dreams in sports, music, or other careers, but life often presents unexpected turns that redefine their journeys.

In Okoye’s case, what could have been a football career eventually turned into a music legacy. Together with his twin brother, he helped shape one of Africa’s most influential music groups, bringing Nigerian pop music to global audiences.

His reflection also highlights an important lesson: having multiple talents and passions can open doors to opportunities one might never have imagined.

For many fans, it is fascinating to imagine that if circumstances had been different, Peter Okoye might have been known today as a football star rather than a music icon. Yet his journey proves that sometimes the road we did not plan ends up becoming the one that defines us the most.
