Simeone Provides Injury Update on Lookman, Sorloth Ahead of Elche Clash
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has offered an update on the fitness of Ademola Lookman and Alexander Sorloth ahead of their LaLiga fixture against Elche on Wednesday.
Lookman picked up an adductor injury during Atletico’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad last weekend, forcing him off in the 63rd minute, where he was replaced by Nicolas Gonzalez.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Simeone played down concerns, describing the injuries to both Lookman and Sorloth as minor. He expressed optimism that the duo could return to full fitness soon, potentially in time for the weekend’s fixtures.
“We will see how they recover from this minor injury… hopefully they will be fully recovered by Saturday,” Simeone said, relying on the medical team’s assessment.
Opinion: A Small Injury, But a Big Concern at a Crucial Time
While Simeone has labeled the injuries as “minor,” timing is everything in football—and this couldn’t have come at a more delicate stage of the season.
Lookman has been an important attacking outlet, bringing pace and unpredictability, while Sorloth offers physical presence and finishing ability. Even a short absence can disrupt rhythm, especially when matches are coming thick and fast.
Simeone’s cautious optimism suggests Atletico are managing the situation carefully rather than taking risks. And that’s the right call. Rushing players back too quickly often leads to bigger problems down the line.
For Atletico, the key now is balance—getting results without over-relying on half-fit players. Because at this stage of the season, staying available can be just as important as being brilliant.
