Timini Egbuson Sparks Debate on Money and Mental Health After Viral Post
Popular Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate about money, happiness, and depression, stating that financial success does not automatically guarantee emotional well-being.
The discussion began after a viral post on X suggested that people struggling with depression simply needed a large sum of money—specifically claiming, “You’re not depressed, you need 20 million naira.”
Reacting to the statement, Egbuson dismissed the idea that money is a cure-all for mental health struggles, saying, “It’s not always about money sha.”
His comment quickly sparked widespread conversation online, with many users agreeing that depression can stem from several factors beyond financial hardship, including grief, anxiety, trauma, and personal life challenges.
Others, however, argued that financial pressure remains one of the biggest contributors to emotional distress, insisting that solving money problems could significantly reduce stress for many individuals.
Opinion
The debate highlights a common misunderstanding about mental health: the assumption that one solution fits all cases. While financial stability can certainly reduce stress and improve quality of life, it does not automatically protect anyone from emotional struggles.
Mental health is shaped by a combination of factors—relationships, personal experiences, physical health, and environment all play a role. Reducing it strictly to money oversimplifies a very complex issue.
At the same time, it’s also true that financial insecurity can intensify emotional pressure, especially in societies where daily survival is uncertain. The reality likely sits in the middle: money can solve some problems, but not all forms of pain.
