Akwa United Celebrate Okon, Okenwa and Menegbe After Impressive NNL Campaign
Akwa United F.C. midfielder Paulinus Okon has been named the club’s Player of the Season following an impressive 2025/26 Nigeria National League campaign.
Okon played a key role in the Promise Keepers’ push for promotion, helping the team finish second in NNL Conference A. The midfielder contributed four goals during the season and was rewarded with a cash prize of ₦1 million in recognition of his performances.
The club also honoured striker Micheal Okenwa, who emerged as Akwa United’s top scorer after finding the net five times during the campaign. Okenwa received ₦1.5 million for his contribution in front of goal.
In addition, Yannick Menegbe was recognized as the club’s leading assist provider, earning praise for his creativity and attacking influence throughout the season.
Despite their strong performances, Akwa United narrowly missed promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League after finishing behind Sporting Lagos in Conference A.
A Season of Progress Despite Promotion Heartbreak
The awards ceremony offered an opportunity for Akwa United to celebrate individual excellence despite falling short of their ultimate objective.
Okon’s consistency in midfield, Okenwa’s goals, and Menegbe’s creativity were among the bright spots in a campaign that kept the club in contention for promotion until the final stages.
For a club with a proud history in Nigerian football, missing out on promotion will undoubtedly be disappointing. However, the performances of these players suggest that the foundation for a stronger challenge next season is already in place.
Opinion: Recognition Matters Even in Defeat
One of the most important things clubs can do after a difficult season is acknowledge the players who gave their all, and Akwa United deserve credit for doing exactly that.
While promotion remains the primary target, rewarding standout performers sends a positive message that hard work and commitment will not go unnoticed. Such recognition can boost morale and motivate players ahead of another demanding campaign.
For Paulinus Okon, being named Player of the Season is a testament to his influence in midfield and his importance to the team. Okenwa and Menegbe also demonstrated qualities that Akwa United can build around moving forward.
The disappointment of missing promotion will linger, but if the club can retain its key performers and strengthen a few areas, the Promise Keepers may be well-positioned to mount an even stronger push for a return to the NPFL next season.
