Rema Opens Up on Past Relationship, Says He Walked Away from ‘Manipulative’ Romance

Rema Opens Up on Past Relationship, Says He Walked Away from ‘Manipulative’ Romance

Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema has shared details about a past romantic relationship, revealing that he decided to end it because he felt overwhelmed by what he described as manipulative behaviour.

The singer, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, made the disclosure during a recent interview with YouTuber Korty EO, where he reflected on the challenges he faced in balancing personal relationships with the pressures of fame.

According to Rema, the relationship had many positive moments and was "beautiful" in several ways. However, he explained that it also came with emotional strain that eventually became difficult to manage.

The award-winning artist said that after dealing with the demands of his career and public life, he hoped to find peace and comfort at home. Instead, he often encountered additional stress, which ultimately contributed to the breakdown of the relationship.

"My romantic relationship was beautiful but a little quite manipulative. So much pressure. Knowing the world puts so much pressure on me but coming back home is where you want to feel relieved but when you come back home and you are getting more pressure, it's a different story. For now, I'm done."

Rema added that he eventually reached a point where he could no longer tolerate the situation and chose to walk away.

Life in the Spotlight

As one of Africa's biggest music exports, Rema has experienced rapid global success, with hit records, international tours, and growing commercial influence. However, his comments offer a glimpse into the personal challenges that can accompany fame.

For many celebrities, maintaining healthy relationships while navigating constant public scrutiny, demanding schedules, and professional expectations can be particularly difficult.

Opinion: Success Doesn't Eliminate Relationship Challenges

Rema's remarks highlight an important reality often overlooked in conversations about fame: personal relationships can be just as complicated for successful public figures as they are for anyone else.

While listeners only hear one side of the story, his comments underscore the importance of emotional support and stability in relationships. For individuals facing high-pressure careers, home often serves as a place of refuge. When that sense of peace is missing, even a relationship that began positively can become difficult to sustain.

What stands out in Rema's reflection is not necessarily the criticism of his former partner but the recognition that some relationships, despite having good moments, may no longer be healthy for those involved.

As the singer continues to focus on his music and career, his experience may resonate with many young people navigating the balance between ambition, personal well-being, and romantic relationships.
