Blessing Onwukwe Reveals ₦1 Million Earnings for “Mama Monica” Role as Film Continues to Trend

Blessing Onwukwe Reveals ₦1 Million Earnings for “Mama Monica” Role as Film Continues to Trend

Nollywood actress Blessing Onwukwe has revealed that she earned close to ₦1 million for her role in the second installment of the hit film Monica, where she played the widely talked-about character “Mama Monica.”

Speaking in an interview with Yanga FM on Tuesday, the actress said her payment reflected the growing success and impact of the movie, which has continued to generate massive online engagement.

“Monica went over a million. For Monica II, it exceeded one million,” she said, noting that she was satisfied with the remuneration for her performance.

Onwukwe also shared insights into how she was selected for the role, explaining that she was approached unexpectedly and had to carefully study the script before accepting it.

“I began considering how I would make the character come to life. I had to write a backstory for her,” she explained.

According to her, she mentally prepared for the role long before filming began, a process she says helped her fully embody the emotionally intense “Mama Monica” character that has since gone viral online.

The film Monica, produced by Uche Montana, has become one of Nollywood’s most talked-about releases of 2026, attracting millions of views on YouTube.

The storyline, which explores family conflict and the struggles of a firstborn daughter, has sparked strong reactions from audiences, with many praising Onwukwe’s convincing portrayal of a complex maternal figure.

Opinion: Viral Nollywood Roles Are Changing How Actors Are Valued

The success of Blessing Onwukwe in Monica highlights a growing shift in Nollywood where viral performance value is becoming just as important as traditional box office success.

In the past, film earnings were often tied strictly to cinema releases or major production deals. But today, digital platforms like YouTube are reshaping how actors are recognized—and compensated.

A role like “Mama Monica,” which sparks widespread online discussion and meme culture, carries influence beyond the screen. It drives engagement, keeps a film trending, and extends its lifespan far beyond release day.

However, the ₦1 million figure also reflects a broader conversation about pay equity in Nollywood. While viral success brings visibility, many actors still argue that compensation does not always match the level of impact their performances generate.

Still, one thing is clear: performances that connect deeply with audiences—especially on digital platforms—are now shaping the future economics of Nigerian film.

And in that evolving space, actors like Onwukwe are proving that one powerful character can define a career moment and dominate online conversations at the same time.
