Gary Neville Picks Wayne Rooney Over Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United’s Greatest Forward

Gary Neville Picks Wayne Rooney Over Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United’s Greatest Forward

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has sparked fresh debate among football fans after naming Wayne Rooney—not Cristiano Ronaldo—as the greatest forward he ever watched at Old Trafford.

Neville, who spent nearly two decades at Manchester United and shared the dressing room with some of the club’s most iconic stars, made the revelation during an appearance on former teammate Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube show, Rio Meets.

Asked to name the best forward he witnessed in a United shirt, Neville did not hesitate in selecting Rooney, praising the former England captain's all-round abilities and unmatched versatility.

“He is the best, Wazza. He was the best forward I ever saw at Manchester United,” Neville said.

The former right-back went on to compare Rooney to several United legends, including Mark Hughes, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Eric Cantona, Paul Scholes, and Dwight Yorke, arguing that Rooney combined the strengths of all of them into one complete package.

“He was a mixture of Mark Hughes, Van Nistelrooy, Eric Cantona, Paul Scholes in the half turn, Dwight Yorke; he was a mixture of all the best players that were amazing,” Neville explained.

“He could do all the things that they could do. He could drop in, he could pass, he could finish, he could head, left-foot, right-foot, could sprint back and defend.”

Rooney remains Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances, a record that stood as a testament to both his longevity and consistency at the highest level.

A Choice That Will Divide Opinion

Neville's verdict is certain to ignite passionate discussions among Manchester United supporters. Many fans will point to Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible goal-scoring exploits, Ballon d’Or triumphs, and global influence as reasons why the Portuguese superstar deserves the title of United’s greatest forward.

However, Neville’s argument appears to be based on completeness rather than statistics alone. While Ronaldo evolved into one of football’s deadliest goalscorers, Rooney offered a broader skill set. He could score, create, defend, lead the press, and seamlessly adapt to different roles for the benefit of the team.

The debate ultimately comes down to what fans value most: Ronaldo’s extraordinary individual brilliance or Rooney’s all-round contribution to the team. Both players occupy a special place in Manchester United history, but Neville’s comments highlight why Rooney continues to be regarded by many former teammates as one of the most complete footballers ever to wear the famous red shirt.

Whether supporters agree or disagree, one thing is certain—few players have left as lasting an impact on Manchester United as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
