Anita Joseph Withdraws Apology, Fires Back at Caramel Plug Over AI Photo Dispute

Anita Joseph Withdraws Apology, Fires Back at Caramel Plug Over AI Photo Dispute

The controversy between Nollywood actress Anita Joseph and social media personality Caramel Plug has taken another dramatic turn, with Anita withdrawing her apology and responding strongly to the influencer's criticism.

The dispute began after Caramel accused Anita of using one of her photographs, editing out her face with artificial intelligence (AI), and sharing the altered image online without permission or acknowledgment.

Following the backlash, Anita initially apologised publicly, explaining that the incident resulted from AI editing and insisting she had no intention of disrespecting Caramel.

However, Caramel rejected the explanation, sarcastically telling Anita to ensure her "imaginary AI boy" performed better next time. She also made it clear that she did not know the actress personally.

In a fresh response shared on Instagram, Anita claimed that the attention generated by the controversy had actually benefited Caramel's photograph.

"Nobody knew you took a picture like that. Girl, your picture didn't even trend; I made it trend. Now put some respect on that name," Anita wrote.

The actress further disclosed that she had deleted her earlier apology after receiving advice from her supporters, adding that she intended to help make Caramel trend even more through the ongoing conversation.

Despite her remarks, Anita maintained that she holds the technology studio responsible for creating the situation rather than Caramel herself.

The disagreement has continued to attract widespread reactions online, with many social media users debating the ethics of using AI-generated edits that incorporate another person's image without consent.

The incident has also reignited broader conversations about artificial intelligence, digital content ownership and the responsibilities of public figures when using emerging technologies for social media content.

Opinion: Public Apologies Lose Their Value When They Are Quickly Reversed

The Anita Joseph and Caramel Plug dispute illustrates how quickly social media disagreements can escalate, especially when emotions outweigh efforts to resolve the issue.

Anita's initial apology appeared to acknowledge that a mistake had been made. However, withdrawing that apology and replacing it with fresh criticism risks undermining the sincerity of her earlier statement.

At the same time, the controversy raises a genuine issue that extends beyond the two personalities involved. Artificial intelligence is making it easier than ever to manipulate images, but technological convenience does not eliminate the need for consent, proper credit and respect for creators.

Ultimately, this episode serves as a reminder that accountability and professionalism remain essential in the digital age. A simple misunderstanding can become a prolonged public dispute if both sides prioritise winning the argument over resolving the issue.
