Femi Otedola Reflects on N200 Million Education Donation, Says True Wealth Lies in Changing Lives

Femi Otedola Reflects on N200 Million Education Donation, Says True Wealth Lies in Changing Lives

Nigerian billionaire businessman Femi Otedola has reflected on one of his notable philanthropic contributions, sharing a throwback to a major donation he made to support education in Lagos State.

On his Instagram page, Otedola posted photos from the Sir Michael Otedola Scholarship Award Ceremony, where he donated ₦200 million to the scholarship scheme established by his late father in 1987.

The event was chaired by then-Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who now serves as Nigeria's President.

Looking back on the moment, Otedola reaffirmed his family's longstanding commitment to education and youth development.

"Throwback Thursday. 21 years ago today (in 2005), then Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, chaired the Sir Michael Otedola Scholarship Scheme Award Ceremony. Today, His Excellency now serves as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

At the ceremony, I donated N200,000,000 to the scholarship scheme founded by my late father in 1987, continuing our family's commitment to investing in education.

True wealth is not measured by what we keep, but by the lives we change."

Over the years, Otedola has been involved in several philanthropic and educational initiatives. In 2022, he was appointed Chancellor of Augustine University and donated ₦2 billion towards the institution's engineering faculty. He also serves as Chairman of FBN Holdings, reflecting his influence in Nigeria's corporate sector.

Beyond business, Otedola has often shared personal moments with the public. From humorous family videos with his daughter Temi Otedola to tributes acknowledging his wife's role in raising their children, the billionaire has continued to give followers glimpses into both his family life and charitable efforts.

Opinion

Philanthropy often receives less attention than wealth creation, yet it can leave a more enduring legacy. Supporting education, in particular, has a multiplier effect—creating opportunities that can benefit individuals, families, and communities for generations. While successful businesspeople are frequently recognised for their financial achievements, their long-term impact is often measured by how they use their resources to improve society. Otedola's reflection serves as a reminder that investments in people can outlast any business success.
