Paraguay Senator Threatens Legal Action Against Mbappé as Racism Row Deepens

Paraguay Senator Threatens Legal Action Against Mbappé as Racism Row Deepens

A bitter war of words has erupted between Kylian Mbappé and Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, with the politician threatening legal action after the French captain condemned her over racially offensive remarks.

The controversy began after France's World Cup knockout victory over Paraguay, when Amarilla posted racial slurs directed at Mbappé on social media. The France national football team forward responded by describing the senator as "despicable" and accusing her of recklessness and blatant racism.

Rather than backing down, Amarilla doubled down in an open letter released on Monday, insisting that Mbappé had shown disrespect by allegedly failing to shake hands with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill after the match.

Speaking during a press conference at Paraguay's Congress, the senator claimed she had been discriminated against and warned that she could sue the Real Madrid star for what she described as gender and political violence.

"I was wronged and had ample reason to file a complaint," Amarilla said. "I would advise Mbappé to read my letter, if he is capable of reading, and to be cautious with Paraguayans. We imprisoned Ronaldinho for corruption, and he should not underestimate me; I can take legal action against him for gender violence and political violence. An apology to me is warranted."

The controversy has, however, drawn criticism within Paraguay itself. The Paraguayan government publicly distanced itself from Amarilla's comments, stating that it "deplores and rejects" the remarks made against Mbappé.

Government officials further stressed that the senator's statements do not reflect Paraguay's values of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and human dignity.

Opinion

Public officials carry a greater responsibility than most when speaking on sensitive issues. Regardless of disagreements over sporting conduct, racist language has no place in public discourse and inevitably shifts attention away from football itself.

The Paraguayan government's swift condemnation sends an important message that offensive remarks should not be mistaken for national opinion. As for Mbappé, players are entitled to defend themselves against discriminatory abuse, but it is in the interest of all parties that this dispute is resolved through dialogue rather than an escalating exchange of accusations that overshadows the World Cup.
