Mr Macaroni Remembers #EndSARS Victims, Says Nigerians Are Now ‘In Love with Their Oppressors’
Popular skitmaker and actor, Mr Macaroni, has once again stirred emotions as he reflected on the tragic events of October 20, 2020, at the Lekki Tollgate, where peaceful #EndSARS protesters were allegedly shot at by security agents.
The comedian, known for his outspoken activism, took to his X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram pages to mark the anniversary of the incident, which remains one of the darkest chapters in Nigeria’s recent history.
In his post, he wrote:
“Nigerian youths lost their lives, jobs, families, and dreams at the hands of the most corrupt and evil people we call leaders! Even though my people are now in love with their oppressors, this day — 20/10/2020 — is never to be forgotten nor forgiven!”
The #EndSARS movement, which started as an online campaign against police brutality, evolved into a nationwide protest that united millions of Nigerians—especially young people—demanding justice, accountability, and good governance. The Lekki Tollgate shooting remains a haunting symbol of government repression and unhealed national trauma.
Opinion: 20/10/2020 — A Date Nigeria Must Never Erase
Mr Macaroni’s words echo a painful truth: time may move forward, but justice remains frozen. The tragedy of October 20, 2020, was more than a protest gone wrong—it was a moment when a generation’s faith in leadership was violently tested.
What is perhaps more heartbreaking is how quickly many seem to have moved on, choosing political convenience over collective memory. As Mr Macaroni noted, the irony is that some Nigerians now celebrate the same leaders who once silenced their cries.
But remembrance matters. Nations that forget their pain risk repeating it. The lives lost at Lekki were not just statistics; they were voices of courage calling for a better Nigeria.
As the years go by, one can only hope that remembrance transforms into responsibility—responsibility to demand accountability, to keep questioning power, and to ensure that no young Nigerian is ever punished again for seeking justice.
