Slimcase Urges Afrobeats Artists to Stay True to Their Roots
Nigerian music star Otunba Lamba, popularly known as Slimcase, has called on Afrobeats artists to preserve the genre’s authenticity and cultural heritage.
Speaking on The Link Up Show, Slimcase emphasized the importance of cultural awareness and artistic influence in shaping both the sound and identity of Afrobeats.
“Every Afrobeats artist that hasn’t seen Sina by Michael B. Jordan isn’t a real Afrobeats artist,” he remarked, highlighting the role of creative inspiration in evolving the genre.
Slimcase also cautioned that the global drive for recognition could dilute the originality of Afrobeats if artists lose touch with its street music roots and energetic foundations.
“The moment you want to club, you want to possess everybody, and then they lose the club. That is what happened to Afrobeats,” he added, stressing the need for musicians to remain grounded in the culture that birthed the movement.
Opinion: Authenticity is Key to Afrobeats’ Global Rise
Slimcase’s message serves as a timely reminder for Afrobeats artists, especially as the genre continues to gain international acclaim. While global exposure and commercial success are important, the soul of Afrobeats lies in its grassroots energy, storytelling, and connection to Nigerian street culture.
The balance between innovation and tradition will determine whether Afrobeats remains a culturally rich and globally respected genre. Slimcase’s call encourages artists to honor the foundations of the music while still experimenting, ensuring that Afrobeats does not lose its distinctive identity in the rush for worldwide popularity.
