CAF Appoints Sudanese Officials for Pyramids FC vs Rivers United Champions League Clash

CAF Appoints Sudanese Officials for Pyramids FC vs Rivers United Champions League Clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the match officials for the CAF Champions League matchday one encounter between defending champions Pyramids FC and Nigeria’s Rivers United.

Sudanese referee Mahmood Ali Ismail will take charge of the high-profile tie scheduled for Saturday, November 22, at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

Ismail will be supported by three other Sudanese officials:

  • Mohammed Abdallah Ibrahim – Assistant Referee 1

  • Omer Hamid Mohamed Ahmed – Assistant Referee 2

  • Abdalaziz Jafar Abdallah Estalgoo – Fourth Official

In addition, South Sudan’s Makur Majok Kariom Mabil has been appointed as the match commissioner.

Rivers United, who are participating in the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time in their history, will next face Moroccan giants RS Berkane on Friday, November 28, in Uyo.
Zambian side Power Dynamos completes the group.

OPINION: A Fair Appointment—Now the Real Test Begins for Rivers United

CAF’s decision to appoint an all-Sudanese team for this clash may look ordinary on paper, but it speaks volumes about the need for neutrality and clarity in a group packed with powerhouses. In a competition where officiating can easily tilt the balance, assigning referees with no direct affiliation to the countries involved is a commendable step that should help ensure fairness.

For Rivers United, however, the spotlight is not on the referees—it's on their readiness. Facing Pyramids FC away in Cairo is no small task. The Egyptians are experienced, disciplined, and used to the pressure of continental football.

But this is exactly where Rivers United must begin to show they belong on this level.

Their qualification for the group stage is historic, but history alone will not earn them respect—performance will. A composed showing under the watch of these neutral officials could set the tone for the rest of their campaign.

If Rivers United can keep their nerves, stay organized, and play with belief, they may surprise many and announce themselves as more than newcomers. With Power Dynamos and RS Berkane also in the mix, every point will matter.

Saturday is not just a match; it’s a statement opportunity.
