Rivers United Jet Out to Egypt for Historic CAF Champions League Clash Against Pyramids FC
Rivers United have departed Nigeria for Egypt ahead of their CAF Champions League matchday one showdown against defending champions, Pyramids FC.
The team, comprising players and officials, flew out through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, after arriving from Port Harcourt on Tuesday to connect their international flight.
The crucial encounter is scheduled to hold on Saturday at the iconic 30 June Stadium in Cairo, where the Pride of Rivers will be making their historic debut in the group stage of Africa’s most prestigious club competition.
After the opener in Egypt, Rivers United will return to Nigeria to face Morocco’s RS Berkane in a matchday two clash set to take place in Uyo on Friday, November 28.
This campaign marks the first time Rivers United are participating in the CAF Champions League group phase—an achievement many fans consider a long-awaited step forward for one of Nigeria’s most consistent clubs in recent years.
OPINION: A Defining Moment for Rivers United and Nigerian Football
Rivers United’s qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage is more than just a milestone for the Port Harcourt-based club—it is a breath of fresh air for Nigerian club football.
Over the years, Nigerian teams have struggled to make a strong impression in continental competitions, often bowing out in preliminary rounds. But Rivers United’s steady rise shows what structure, ambition, and consistency can achieve.
Their trip to face Pyramids FC—arguably one of Africa’s most financially powerful and technically organized clubs—will be a true test of character. And while many pundits see the Egyptians as favourites, football has shown time and again that passion, discipline and belief can turn underdogs into headlines.
If Rivers United can put up a strong performance in Cairo, it won’t just uplift the club—it will send a message that Nigerian football can still compete with the best on the continent.
For now, all eyes are on Saturday. And whether they return with three points, one point, or simply experience, one thing is clear: Rivers United are writing a new chapter, and Nigerian football desperately needs this kind of story.
