Every Governor Is Promising Massive Votes, And None Of Them Can Deliver That

Geo-Political News

Ondo State will deliver massive votes for Bola Tinubu in 2027, according to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Katsina's governor has welcomed transport union endorsements for the same ticket. Both statements will be repeated, in different states, roughly weekly until January.

What a governor can and cannot do

A Nigerian governor genuinely controls a great deal that matters to a presidential campaign. He controls the state party structure, the local government chairmen, the security committee that meets before an election, and a great deal of the money that moves around a campaign in his state.

What he does not control is turnout. Nigerian elections have had low and falling turnout for several cycles, and low turnout is the single most important variable in a governor's promise. A state that casts 700,000 votes cannot deliver a million, however loyal its structure is.

The gap between column one and column two is where every delivery promise dies.

Why they say it anyway

Because the audience for the statement is not the electorate. It is the presidency. A governor promising massive delivery is bidding for position in a campaign structure that was published on Saturday, with Abdulaziz Yari as Director-General and hundreds of named appointments beneath him.

Being visibly useful before January is how a governor secures federal attention after it. That is the actual transaction, and everybody involved understands it.

The promise is not a forecast. It is a job application.

What would be worth reporting

Not the promise. The comparison afterwards. Every one of these statements creates a public number that can be checked against the certified result in January, state by state, governor by governor.

Almost nobody does that check, which is why the promises stay free.
