Sunday Oliseh Highlights What Could Hinder Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 Hopes
Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has shared his thoughts on what could prevent Nigeria from clinching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco. Speaking on a recent episode of Global Football Insights ahead of Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda, Oliseh emphasized the importance of defensive solidity.
“What could stop Nigeria from winning the AFCON is if we don’t get our defensive house in order, to make sure that when we score, we don’t concede,” Oliseh noted. He added that Nigeria’s biggest strength lies in their attacking options: “One chance we have is that we have one of the most potent striking forces in the tournament.”
Nigeria last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013 under the late coach Stephen Keshi, defeating Burkina Faso 1–0 in the final, courtesy of Sunday Mba’s decisive strike. Since then, the Super Eagles have been chasing the continental glory that once brought the nation so much pride.
Opinion: Oliseh’s observation hits the nail on the head. Nigeria’s attacking prowess is undeniable, but football at this level is often decided by the balance between offense and defense. If the Super Eagles can tighten their backline while maintaining their forward momentum, they have a real chance to end the 12-year AFCON drought. Fans will be hoping that Eric Chelle’s men can blend flair with discipline as they navigate the knockout stages in Morocco.
