Carolyna Hutchings Opens Up About Racism and Personal Struggles as a Mixed-Race Woman in Nigeria

Carolyna Hutchings Opens Up About Racism and Personal Struggles as a Mixed-Race Woman in Nigeria

Scottish-Nigerian actress Carolyna Hutchings has courageously shared her experiences growing up as a mixed-race child in Nigeria, shedding light on the racism and prejudice she faced both at home and in school.

In a candid interview with Arise TV, Hutchings opened up about the challenges of navigating life in Nigeria with a mixed racial background. Raised by her grandmother, the actress revealed that her skin color and hair texture made her a target for bullying, something she endured from primary school through to secondary school.

"As a mixed-race living in Nigeria, who was brought up by her grandmom, I faced a lot of racism. The colour of my skin and the texture of my hair was a big problem for me. I was bullied all through primary school to secondary school. So I had to learn how to defend myself," Hutchings shared.

Professional Struggles and Personal Growth

Despite her academic achievements, which include an MBA, an MSA in international law, and a Doctorate degree, Hutchings also faced discrimination in the workplace. Her beauty and mixed-race background made her a target for societal judgment, despite her impressive qualifications.

"I’m such a scholar. I have an MBA and MSA in international law. I have a lot of professional certificates from Lagos Business School and Unilag. I actually have a Doctorate degree as well. So when you speak and you’re a beautiful mixed-race woman, you tend to get bashed," Hutchings explained.

In addition to these struggles, she also faced the stigmatization of being a divorcee, adding another layer to her challenges. However, Hutchings expressed that these experiences have helped her build a thick skin, enabling her to rise above the negativity and become more resilient.

Breaking Barriers and Building Resilience

Hutchings’ story is a powerful reminder of the obstacles many face, especially those who stand out for reasons outside their control. Her ability to overcome racism, professional bias, and social stigma speaks to her strength and determination. It's easy to see why she believes in herself, given the immense academic and professional success she's achieved despite the barriers placed before her.

Her story isn’t just one of struggle; it is one of resilience. Hutchings’ journey highlights how self-belief, education, and perseverance can help break down even the toughest walls. The fact that she has managed to defy the odds is an inspiration to everyone, particularly young mixed-race individuals who may feel ostracized or excluded.

The Bigger Picture: Addressing Racism in Society

What Hutchings' experience also brings to the forefront is the deep-seated issue of colorism and racism in societies around the world, not just in Nigeria. Her words underscore the necessity for continued discussions about race, as well as the importance of creating inclusive environments where everyone, regardless of skin color, can thrive.

In Nigeria, where colorism still pervades many areas of life, Hutchings' testimony offers insight into the day-to-day challenges faced by individuals who do not fit the "ideal" mold of beauty. The bias against mixed-race people in the country and the stigmatization of those who have been divorced further exemplify the societal issues that still need to be addressed.

Conclusion: A Message of Strength and Hope

Carolyna Hutchings' story is an inspiring one, showing that despite the challenges, growth is possible. Through every moment of racial prejudice, professional rejection, and personal hardship, she has shown that strength lies not in avoiding these experiences but in learning to rise above them.

Her message is clear: "Build your skin thick, and let your light shine." In a world that can often be harsh, Hutchings’ journey proves that resilience, education, and the ability to embrace one’s identity are the keys to overcoming adversity.
