Tragedy in Nollywood: Two Actors Die After Alleged Food and Wine Poisoning in Owerri

Tragedy in Nollywood: Two Actors Die After Alleged Food and Wine Poisoning in Owerri

What was meant to be a celebratory night of bonding after a successful movie shoot turned into tragedy in Owerri, Imo State, as two Nigerian actors tragically lost their lives following the consumption of food and wine during a house party hosted by a movie director.

According to reports confirmed by the Imo State Police Command, the actors, whose identities are yet to be officially released, died in the early hours of Friday, April 18, after allegedly eating rice and drinking from a bottle of Calypso wine presented by the host.

🎬 A Night That Ended in Darkness

Sources say that after the movie shoot, the director invited the actors and three female guests for a small gathering. Rice and wine were served, and according to one of the survivors, the deceased had consumed most of the drink.

“Their host offered them rice, and everybody ate. He later presented a bottle of Calypso and wine. But they only took a sip and never drank again. However, the two other guys who are now dead finished the drink,” said Kaito Karisia, a source close to the scene.

By morning, two of the actors were found dead, while the other two were barely breathing. The survivors were immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri, where they are currently receiving treatment.

🚨 Police Investigation Underway

The unnamed movie director and the three female guests have since been arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation. Authorities have begun a full investigation, with the incident already sparking speculations of foul play, negligence, or possible poisoning.

💔 Opinion: Is Nollywood Doing Enough for Its People?

This shocking loss shines a harsh light on the often overlooked welfare and safety protocols within Nigeria's film industry. Whether this was a case of negligence or something more sinister, questions must be asked — and answers demanded.

Why are there no industry safety guidelines for cast gatherings, especially after shoots? Why does it seem like too many Nollywood tragedies are linked to carelessness around food, health, or mental stress?

✊ Justice Must Prevail

We can no longer dismiss events like these as mere coincidences. These were not just actors — they were sons, friends, colleagues, and dreamers whose lives were cut short under mysterious circumstances. The industry and fans alike must push for transparency in the investigation and ensure justice is served.

Let’s remember their names. Let’s demand accountability. And let’s advocate for a safer, more professional Nollywood.

🕊️ Rest in peace to the departed. May your light continue to shine through the stories you told.
