Flying Eagles Clip Pharaohs’ Wings in Cairo Thriller — Egypt Coach Hails His Boys’ Spirit

In what many are calling a preview of AFCON fireworks, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles edged past the Young Pharaohs of Egypt 2–1 in a high-tempo pre-AFCON U-20 friendly on Tuesday night at the Cairo International Stadium.

Despite the narrow loss, Egypt U-20 head coach Osama Nabih had nothing but praise for his team’s performance.

⚽ Match Recap

  • 10’ – Nigeria’s Kparobo Arierhi, the Norway-based starlet, silenced the Cairo crowd with an early goal.

  • 68’ – Egypt responded in style as Ahmed Kaabaka capped off a brilliant team play with a stunning equalizer.

  • 84’ – The decider came from Nigeria’s Precious Benjamin, who calmly converted a penalty to seal the win for the Flying Eagles.

🗣️ Coach Nabih Speaks: “We Could Have Won”

Despite the defeat, Coach Nabih remained upbeat:

“We faced a strong and well-organised team,” he told the Egypt Football Association's official website. “Our players delivered one of the most valuable and intense experiences from all technical, tactical, and physical aspects.”

He added that his team controlled much of the game and were unlucky not to convert more chances before conceding the late penalty.

💭 Opinion: A Friendly With Firepower – Just What the Tournament Needs!

This match had AFCON energy written all over it. For the Flying Eagles, it’s a confidence booster ahead of Group B battles against Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya. For Egypt, it’s a wake-up call wrapped in promise — they showed creativity, grit, and sharp passing.

Both sides demonstrated why they’re considered major contenders for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

🗓️ What’s Next?

Egypt’s U-20 side will kick off their Group A campaign on Sunday, April 27 against Zambia’s Young Chipolopolo. They’ll also face Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Tanzania.

For the Flying Eagles, all eyes are now on their opener against Tunisia next week Thursday.

🔥 If this was just a friendly, imagine the real action! Can the Flying Eagles soar all the way? Will the Young Pharaohs defend their turf at home?
