Davido Reveals His Father’s Power Business and How They Supply 18% of West Africa’s Electricity

Davido Reveals His Father’s Power Business and How They Supply 18% of West Africa’s Electricity

In a recent appearance on the American podcast Bagfuel Brigade, Nigerian singer and Grammy-nominated artist Davido shared fascinating insights into his family’s power business, revealing that his father, Dr. Deji Adeleke, is a major player in West Africa’s energy sector.

According to Davido, his father started his successful journey by earning his first million at the young age of 23. Today, Dr. Adeleke runs a power generation company that supplies approximately 18% of the entire electricity in West Africa, with the electricity being sold to the government for distribution.

Davido went on to explain, “My dad made his first million like 23. Right now, we supply about 18% of the whole electricity in West Africa. He sells the power we generate to the government, because the government has the authority to distribute it.”

In a prior revelation in October 2024, Dr. Adeleke shared that his company generates about 15% of Nigeria’s electricity, with assistance from Chinese engineering firms. The businessman is also in the final stages of constructing a 1,250MW power plant, set to become Nigeria’s largest power facility upon completion in 2025.

Our Take:
Davido’s recent revelation sheds light on the immense contribution his family is making to the energy sector in West Africa, a region that has long struggled with power shortages and unreliable distribution. Dr. Deji Adeleke’s role in not just generating power but also in ensuring large-scale infrastructure developments like the new power plant is both inspiring and commendable. It’s also a powerful example of how Nigerian entrepreneurs are stepping up to solve critical issues that impact the continent’s development.

While the power sector in Nigeria and West Africa still faces many challenges, the Adeleke family's contributions may be a much-needed catalyst for the region’s growth and stability. With the new plant nearing completion, it’s exciting to see how it could transform the energy landscape.

Beyond the energy sector, Davido’s comments highlight the entrepreneurial spirit of his family and the importance of diversifying one’s business ventures. It’s not just about music for Davido; the Adeleke legacy is deeply rooted in business innovation.

What do you think about the Adeleke family's contributions to the energy sector? Do you think this will have a lasting impact on Nigeria’s power crisis? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇
