Tears and Mixed Reactions as Mohbad’s Widow, Son Receive His Posthumous Awards at 2025 Headies
It was a deeply emotional night at the 17th Headies Awards as Omowunmi, the widow of late singer Mohbad, alongside their son Liam, received two posthumous awards on his behalf.
TalkTalk Nigeria reports that Mohbad was honoured with the Best Street-Hop Artiste for his smash hit ‘Ask About Me’ and the Viewers’ Choice Award for his collaboration with Chike on ‘Egwu’.
Taking the stage with the late singer’s younger brother, Adura, Omowunmi dedicated the awards to their son, Liam, saying:
“Although Mohbad isn’t here with us anymore, he lives on. I don’t like to address him as my late husband because he lives forever, especially through our son Liam.”
She thanked Headies for shining a light on Mohbad’s legacy and expressed hope that one day, Liam would understand the greatness of his father.
However, the moment sparked diverse reactions online.
While many applauded the tribute, others criticized the late recognition, suggesting that Mohbad was underappreciated during his lifetime.
Comments flooded social media:
@_ImorLe wrote: “When he was alive, them no recognize am. Rubbish Headies.”
@news_arsenal_ echoed: “Why do you guys like celebrating the dead? If he was alive, would you have given him the award?”
@Dchiefskitchen added: “Congratulations. But it’s giving him his flowers after his life.”
Still, some fans celebrated the moment, insisting that remembering Mohbad, even posthumously, keeps his spirit alive.
Our Opinion:
Mohbad’s bittersweet moment at the Headies reminds us of a sad truth — we often celebrate our legends louder after they are gone. While the awards serve as a touching tribute to a young star who left too soon, they also underline the need to value our talents while they are still here. Omowunmi’s grace and strength on that stage spoke volumes: Mohbad’s legacy will continue to inspire, heal, and resonate through little Liam — and through all those he touched with his music.
