Kolade Otunla Makes Waves: Ogun Swimmer Sets New National Record at #GatewayGames2024

Kolade Otunla Makes Waves: Ogun Swimmer Sets New National Record at #GatewayGames2024

In what can only be described as a golden splash of glory, Team Ogun’s Kolade Otunla has rewritten Nigeria’s swimming history books by clinching a historic gold medal in the men’s 100m backstroke at the 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024. Clocking a remarkable 1:02.41, Otunla didn’t just win — he shattered both the national and festival records previously set in 2018.

The atmosphere at the poolside was electric as spectators cheered the 100m backstroke champion, whose determination and discipline echoed in every stroke.

But Otunla wasn’t the only star making Ogun State proud. Earlier in the day, Omolola Tobiloba, another Ogun swimming sensation, bagged gold in the women’s 800-meter freestyle, adding to the state’s medal haul and further cementing its dominance in aquatic sports at this year’s festival.

“Swimming Is Not About Rushing... It’s About Strategy” – Otunla

Speaking with TalkTalk Nigeria moments after his triumph, Otunla’s passion and wisdom belied his age.

“I’m so happy and grateful. Swimming is not about rushing or breaking out too hard. Just make sure you stay on your pace. 70% of your effort should be when you’re going, and once you’re coming back, sprint at 100%,” he said, offering insights into his winning technique.

He went on to praise his coach and sponsor for their unwavering support:

“It’s not by my power. My coach has been waking me up every day to train. All thanks to the person who sponsored me to this level.”

And what’s next for this rising star?

“I wish to be the Olympic champion, and I’m working towards it.”

🗣 Our Take: Nigeria’s Future in the Pool Looks Bright

Kolade Otunla’s win is more than just a personal milestone — it’s a bold message to Nigeria and the world: the next generation of champions is rising. In a country where sports funding and support often trail behind talent, Otunla's story is a powerful reminder that dedication, guidance, and a helping hand can turn potential into podium finishes.

This moment should ignite conversations about investing in grassroots swimming programs and upgrading training facilities nationwide. If Otunla can achieve this with limited resources, imagine what he — and others like him — could do with proper Olympic-level support.

As #GatewayGames2024 continues, one thing is clear: Ogun State isn’t just competing; they're leading with excellence — stroke by stroke, medal by medal.
