Team Lagos Clinch Female Football Gold at National Youth Games
Asaba, Delta State – Team Lagos have written their name in gold after defeating Team Delta to emerge champions of the female football event at the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) currently ongoing in Asaba.
The thrilling encounter ended 1–1 in regulation time, forcing a penalty shootout where Lagos triumphed 5–4.
It was a dramatic comeback for the Lagos side, who fought from a goal down to equalize before holding their nerves in the decisive shootout.
Speaking after the game, Team Lagos captain, Rogert, described the triumph as more than just a victory:
“We have been coming to Delta to win gold medal in the female football event in the National Youth Games. This is more than a victory for me and my team members.”
In contrast, Team Delta captain, Anastasia, who was visibly emotional, blamed their loss on defensive errors:
“My side lost due to some silly mistake from our defence but I return all the glory to God.”
While it was heartbreak for Delta in football, the host state had reason to celebrate in Judo, as Precious Daniel claimed gold in the 40kg girls’ category. Blessing Chukwuengozi of Abia State won silver, while Annabel Iyalekhue of Edo State and Mayor Izibeklen of Bayelsa State settled for bronze.
Opinion: Lagos’ Victory is More Than Football
Team Lagos’ triumph is not just about lifting a trophy — it is about resilience, belief, and the spirit of youth sports in Nigeria. Coming from behind against a home side like Delta, known for their dominance in youth competitions, shows grit that should be applauded.
This victory also highlights the power of female football at the grassroots level. Many of the stars we cheer for today in the Super Falcons and beyond began their journeys in tournaments like this. If given proper structure, investment, and visibility, the NYG can continue to serve as a breeding ground for Nigeria’s next generation of football stars.
On the flip side, Delta’s pain reflects the fine margins in sports. Penalty shootouts are often brutal, and while Anastasia’s tears may sting today, the experience could shape her and her teammates into stronger players tomorrow.
At the heart of it all, the NYG remains more than just a competition — it is a festival of dreams. From football to judo and beyond, these young athletes are laying the foundation for Nigeria’s future in global sports.
