The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has released the official groupings for the 2025 Championship, which is set to run from September 11th to 21st in Umuahia and Abiriba, Abia State.

The draw produced four groups across two zones:

  • Group A1: Royal Queens, Gallant Queens, Castmog Ladies, First Mahi Babes

  • Group A2: Sunshine Queens, Fortress Ladies, Unification FC, Kwara Ladies

  • Group B1: Pelican Stars, Ahudiyannem Queens, Wazbak International, Chosen Generation Angels

  • Group B2: Osun Babes, Ghetto Tigers, Moje Queens, Delta Babes, Imo Striker Queens

Opinion: A Platform for Growth in Women’s Football

The NWFL Championship remains one of the most crucial stages for Nigerian women’s football. Beyond being a promotion battle, it is a platform where raw talents emerge and future stars are discovered.

Clubs like Sunshine Queens, Osun Babes, and Pelican Stars have already established themselves as recognizable names, but the beauty of the Championship lies in the underdogs — lesser-known teams like Castmog Ladies or Ghetto Tigers who could surprise everyone with strong performances.

Hosting the tournament in Abia State is also significant. Abia has a deep-rooted passion for football, and this event could spark greater local interest in women’s football, inspiring the next generation of female athletes.

As Nigeria continues to produce global stars like Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, the NWFL Championship serves as a reminder that the pipeline of talent begins here. With proper media coverage, sponsorship, and fan support, this year’s edition could be one of the most memorable in recent history.
