“They Told Me to Drop Jesus for Fame” – Actress Ekene Umenwa Opens Up on Nollywood’s Dark Pressures

Popular Nollywood actress Ekene Umenwa has stirred up emotional reactions and faith-filled support online after she revealed that certain figures within the Nigerian movie industry once pressured her to abandon her Christian faith in exchange for career advancement.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the Black Choir star opened up about the spiritual battles she faced early in her acting journey. According to her, some insiders in Nollywood suggested she “drop Jesus and Mary” to “move with the flow” and secure her place in the limelight.

“When I came to Nollywood many years ago with my Jesus, I was told by some folks to drop Jesus & Mary to move with the flow so that I can make it,” Ekene wrote, adding, “They said ‘Ekene, this game no be Jesus Jesus oo.’”

Rather than compromise, the actress said she ran back to Jesus, whom she lovingly referred to as her Father, and found strength in Him. Sharing a video of herself dancing to the gospel hit “No Turning Back”, she declared:

“I ran to my Father, and Jesus told me to move, ahead ahead. I thank God today that many people have joined me to proclaim Jesus in Nollywood.”

Ekene, who rose to fame in 2013 and has since featured in over 100 films, is now being praised not just for her talent, but for her unshakeable faith in an industry often accused of being spiritually compromised.

✝️ Opinion: More Than a Confession — It's a Cultural Awakening

Ekene’s story goes beyond personal testimony. It sheds light on a growing conversation in Nigeria's entertainment space: Can you truly succeed without compromise?

While some might dismiss her claims as overly spiritual, the truth is, many young talents entering showbiz face intense pressure — from altering their values, to accepting roles or deals that contradict their beliefs. In this context, her message is refreshing, real, and deeply necessary.

Her public stand is not just a testament of personal conviction; it’s a challenge to other celebrities — and even fans — to remember that faith, integrity, and destiny can coexist.

We need more bold voices like Ekene’s — not just in Nollywood, but across all industries.
