Nancy Isime Opens Up on Faith, Says She Is “Not a Typical Nigerian Christian”

Nancy Isime Opens Up on Faith, Says She Is “Not a Typical Nigerian Christian”

Nollywood actress Nancy Isime has shared her personal perspective on faith, explaining that her relationship with God is guided by personal conviction rather than simply following religious figures.

Speaking during a recent interview with Jay On-Air, the actress said she does not depend on pastors or priests for spiritual direction, noting that she prefers to develop her own understanding of Jesus and her faith journey.

Isime explained that while she listens to and learns from certain spiritual teachers, she does not believe in placing any human being above her personal connection with God.

“I don’t serve mortals. So, I don’t have the need to perform for mortals. And I would always have a mind of my own. I would always do my own thing. I would always figure out God for myself,” she said.

The actress added that she has spiritual “anchors” she learns from, mentioning Apostle Joshua Selman as one of the preachers whose teachings she follows.

“But of course, I have anchors, whom I listen to; preachers like Apostle Joshua Selman. When you understand the kind of preachers I listen to, you will understand where I am coming from. I am not your typical Nigerian Christian, and I don’t want to be. I have my own mindset just like Jesus,” she added.

Her comments have sparked conversations about individual faith, personal interpretation of religion, and the role of spiritual leaders in people’s lives.

While some Nigerians see her statement as an expression of personal spiritual independence, others believe it reflects the changing way many young people approach religion — seeking a deeper personal connection rather than relying solely on traditional structures.

Isime’s remarks highlight a wider discussion within modern Christianity: the balance between learning from spiritual leaders and maintaining a personal relationship with faith.
